Nainital
is a famous hill station in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Nainital is the
judicial capital of Uttarakhand. The High Court of the state is located here.
The Governor of Uttarakhand who resides in the Raj Bhavan in Nainital.
Nainital
is set in the Kumaon foothills of the Himalayas. Nainital is 285 km away from the
state capital Dehradun and 345 km from New Delhi. It is located at a height of 6,837
ft above sea level. Nainital city is placed
in a valley which has an eye-shaped lake. The lake is surrounded by mountains of
which the highest are Naina.

Nainital Lake
Nainital
Lake is situated in Nainital town in Uttarakhand. It is a natural freshwater
lake. Nainital is a hill station of Kumaon district. It is most popular for its
Naini Lake. Naini Lake is situated in the center of the town. There are many
other lakes of near this area.
Nainital
is called the Lake District of India due to Popular Naini Lake. There are four lakes in Kumaon Hills and
Nainital Lake is one of the four Lakes of Kumaon. Another three lakes are Sattal Lake, the
Bhimtal Lake and the Naukuchiyatal Lake.
Nainital
Boat Club which offers boating facilities at the lake. The Annual Kingfisher
Yachting Competition (Regatta) is organized here. It is held in the third week
of June every year. The Kumaon festival is
also held every year during October and November by the Tourism Department.
This Kumaon festival shows the local cultures and traditions of the Uttarakand.
Naina Devi Temple
Naina Devi temple is situated at the upper end of the
attractive Naini Lake. Naina Devi temple is devoted to the goddess of the town
Naina Devi. The Naina Devi Temple is a famous Hindu pilgrimage place in
Nainital. According to the mythologies when God Shiv was carrying the body of
Sati then her eyes fell to the ground where the temple presently stands. After
that this town, lake and the temple name was Naina (eyes).
There
is a big courtyard in the temple complex. Inside the temple complex has sacred
peepal tree and idols of Lord Ganesh and Hanuman. Inside the sanctum, there are
three deities- Kali Devi, Maa Naina Devi and Lord Ganesh.
A grand festival is held for eight days in the complex of
Naina Devi temple. This festival is organized during the Nanda Ashtami. At this
time the temple attracts thousands of tourist and followers. Other festivals are held during Navratri and
Chaitra and attract a massive crowd. Temple is not so far from the main bus
stand of Nainital and one can reach the temple easily walk.
Hanumangarhi
Hanumangarhi is famous temple in Nainital which time and
again visited by local saint Neem Karoli Baba. The temple complex is located
about 3.5 km from the Tallital bus stop. Hanumangarhi temple is devoted Lord
Hanuman. Hanuman was devotee to God Ram. Here Hanuman is showing his tearing chest
to show Rama and Sita in his heart.
Flora and Fauna
The
regions around Nainital is rich in flora
and fauna.The trees and bushes grown in the region are : Banj, Akhrot or
walnut, Hill Pipal, a sacred tree, Ash
tree or Angu, Platanus orientalis (Chinar), Rosa moschata (Kunj or Musk rose),
Cupressus torulosa (Surai or Himalayan cypress) and Pinus (Pine).
Many
species of medicinal and horticulture plants have also been found in the lake.
These are Potamogeton pectinatus, Potamogeton crispus, Polygonum amphibium and Polygonum hydropiper
. The fishes found in the lake are generally carps Mahseer,mirror carp ,Tor tor
( red finned mahseer)and the Tor putitora ( yellow finned mahseer).
Naina Devi Himalayan Bird Conservation Reserve
Naina
Devi Himalayan Bird Conservation Reserve is set in Nainital. It is very famous
for wildlife reserve. This reserve forest is situated in Kumaon region and
positioned in Nainital forest division. Nainital forest division has several vast
collections of high altitude birds, like kalij pheasant, Lady Amherst pheasant,
rose ringed parakeet, golden pheasant and red junglefowl.

G. B. Pant High Altitude Zoo
Pt.
Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo is situated in Nainital. It is a high
altitude zoo which is established in 1984 and opened in 1995 for the public. It
is placed on the Sher Ka Danda hill at a height of 6,900 ft above sea-level. It
is spread over 4.6 hectares. It has become a famous tourist attraction due to
High Altitude Zoo. Besides this there are High Altitude Zoo in India in
Darjeeling and Sikkim.
The zoo
has many species of animals in the Himalayas like Royal Bengal tiger, Tibetan
wolves, leopard cat and Himalayan bear. It has also collection of birds like
Lady Amherst pheasant, rose ringed parakeet, golden pheasant and red
junglefowl.
Night
shelters facilities are available for the animals in zoo. Curtains are tied in
the bird enclosures during the winter season. The zoo is situated around 2
kilometers away from Tallital Bus station in Nainital. Timing of the zoo is Tuesday to Sunday at
09.30 am to 4.30 p.m.
How to Reach
By Air:
The nearest airport is Indira Gandhi International
Airport in New Delhi.
Private and Government Buses, cabs and rented taxis can be taken easily from
outside of the airport to reach the Nainital.
By
Rail: The Nearest railway station is the Kathgodham railway station. It has good train
connectivity with other major stations from Delhi, Lucknow, Agra, Mathura and Kolkata. . Kathgodham railway station is also well connected to
others tourist places in Uttrakhand such as Haridwar.
By
Road: Nainital has good road connectivity to various part of the country. State
transport buses are regularly available. Sleeper and A/c buses are available
from Delhi to Nainital. It is typically an overnight journey and reaches in Nainital
in morning. This journey is quite cheap and comfortable.
Best time to Visit
Nainital can be visited any time of the year. The best
time is to visit from March to June. These months are summer or spring season
in the country. People want to escape this heat and prefer to enjoy in Nainital. November to February is the winter season and
people who love the snow can visit the Nainital.
