Dehradun

Dehradun or Dera Doon is the capital city of Uttarakhand.  The administrative headquarters is in the Dehradun district. It is a Part of the Garhwal region and 236 kilometers away from India's capital New Delhi and 168 kilometres away from Chandigarh.
Dehradun is set in the Doon Valley on the foothills of the Himalayas. The city is known for its picturesque landscape and pleasant climate. Dehradun is a hill station and is well connected with the others Himalayan tourist destinations like Mussoorie and Auli. It is well connected with the Hindu holy cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh along with circuit of Chota Char Dham. Dehradun is also famous for Basmati rice and bakery foods. Dehradun has many defense academies and research institutes such as Indian Military Academy and Forest Research Institute.

There are a lot of small towns and tourist places in Dehradun.

Robbers Cave

Robber's Cave is a river cave formation in Himalaya which is located near Sahasradhara. It is known as Guchhupani.  It is far away around 8 km from the center of Dehradun City. The cave is around 600 meters long and has a highest fall of about 10 meters. In the middle part of it there is a fort wall which is now damaged. It is said that robbers used to use caves to hide valuable things.
It is a natural cave creation where river flows in the cave. This site is a popular tourist spot. It is now being maintained by Uttarakhand State. Tourist can take local bus and reach to Anarwala Village which is a kilometer’s trek away.

Sahastradhara

Sahastradhara is popular picnic spot, located at the Baldi River. Sahastradhara is a very beautiful site which meaning is ‘thousand fold water spring’. The best time to visit is during the monsoon. There is also a man-made waterpark here which is called Joyland Water Park. Tourist can reach at the top of the mountain through the ropeway and enjoying the view of the hills and waterfall from the top.

Lacchiwala Picnic Spot

Lacchiwala is a famous tourist spot particularly during summer season. It is also called as Nature Park due to its forest picturesque beauty and man-made water pools.

Tapkeshwar Temple

Temple is located near a forest on the bank of the Asan River. It is dedicated to God Shiv. The main Shivalinga is set in a natural cave. According to the Mahabharata, Guru Drona lived in this cave for some times and natural cave is named Drona cave after him.

Dehradun Zoo

It is also known as Malsi Deer Park which is situated on the Shivalik Range on the Mussoorie Road.  It is around 10 km far from Dehradun and 23 km from Mussoorie. The main aim of Dehradun Zoo is protection of wild animals as well as developing an education zone.

Buddha Temple (Mindrolling Monastery)

It is set in Clement Town area which is the biggest Buddhist learning center at Dehradun in India. The Monastery was made in 1965 by Kochen Rinpoche. The monastery height is around 220 feet and made in Japanese architecture style
The monastery walls are decorated with paintings which are shown the life of Buddha.  On the fourth floor from where you can see the 360 degrees view of the Doon Valley. There is a very beautiful garden and some shops in the temple complex.

Fun Valley

Fun Valley is an amusement park which is situated around 28KM far from Dehradun. It is famous among the kids and adults to do for amusement. This complex has a shopping center, motel and food court. Tourist can enjoy the rides like Kiddies Pool, Baby Train, Water Disco, Wave Pool, Dragon Coaster and enjoy the Water Park.

Maa Bala Sundari Mandir

Maa Bala Sundari Mandir is set in Sudhowala near Dehradun. The temple is around 3.5 km far from Sudhowala. Temple is devoted to the goddess Maa Bala Sundari. It is also famous as Bal Roop of Maa Vaishno Devi.    Vehicles are avalible to reach the temple from Sudhowala for Tourist and followers. A lot of pilgrims come from the different part of India to get the blessings of Mahmaya Bala Sundari.

Khalanga Memorial

It was the first battle of the Anglo-Nepalese War in 1814–1816. It was called the Battle of Nalapani. It was fought between the armies of the British East India Company and Nepal. The battle place was near the Nalapani fort close to Dehradun. Nalapani fort was sieged by the British between 31 October and 30 November 1814.

Dehradun International Cricket Stadium

Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium is located in Raipur area of Dehradun. It is a multi-purpose stadium which is the first international standard stadium in the state. It was built by Shapoorji Pallonji Engineering and Construction.

Forest Research Institute (India)

FRI is situated in Dehradun which is an institute of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education. It is one of the oldest institutions as well as best institution in the area of forestry research in India. it is a deemed university that  hosts the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA). It was established as the British Imperial Forest School in 1878 and it was again founded as the Imperial Forest Research Institute In 1906 under the British Imperial Forestry Service.

Regional Science Center

Regional Science Center (RSC) is situated in Suddhowala on the outskirts of Dehradun. RSC is in the campus of Uttarakhand Council of Science and Technology (UCOST). The Regional Science Center is a famous destination among children and organizes an educational tour for the   schools. RSC has a science museum, planetarium,  3D theatre and science gallery.

Places near Dehradun

These famous places are near to Dehradun such as Rishikesh which is 34 km far from Dehradun, Mussoorie which is away 15 km from Dehradun, Haridwar which is situated 43 km far from Dehradun. Haridwar and Rishikesh are the Hindu pilgrimage center.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport to reach Dehradun. It is located about 20 km from the city. Private and Government Buses, cabs and rented taxis can be taken easily from outside of the airport to reach the Dehradun.
By Rail: The Nearest railway station is the Dehradun railway station. It has good train connectivity with other major stations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Allahabad and Lucknow. Dehradun railway station is also well connected to others tourist places in Uttrakhand such as Haridwar.
By Road: Dehradun has good road connectivity with various part of the country such as Delhi, Shimla, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Agra and Mussoorie. State transport buses are regularly available. Sleeper and A/c buses are available from Delhi, Shimla and Agra to Dehradun. It is typically an overnight journey and reaches in Dehradun in morning. This journey is quite cheap and comfortable.

Best time to Visit

Dehradun can be visited any time of the year. The best time is to visit from March to June. These months are summer or spring season in the country. People want to escape this heat and prefer to enjoy in Dehradun.  November to February is the winter season in Dehradun.
