Krishna Janmashtami is an annual Hindu festival which celebrates the birth of Lord Vishnu's eighth incarnation Krishna.

This is especially an important festival of Hinduism's Vaishnavism tradition. According to Bhagwat Purana (such as Raslila or Krishna Leela), through the dance drama act of Krishna's life, singing devotional songs, fasting, a night jagaran, is a part of the celebration.

About Shri Krishna

Janmashtami is celebrated when Krishna is born by Devaki and Vasudeva according to the Hindu tradition and his birthday is celebrated as Janmashtami, because he is considered to be the supreme personality of Divinity.

After his birth in Mathura, his father Vasudev carried Krishna across the Yamuna to foster parents Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul. This fact is celebrated on Janmashtami by people singing devotional songs of love for Krishna and keeping the fast in the night. After the birth of Krishna's midnight, idol of Krishna are washed then kept in a cradle. The devotees break their fast by distributing food and sweets. Many communities organize drama known as Rasa Lila or Krishna Lila.

Celebrations of Krishna Janmashtami

Krishna Janmashtami is also famous as Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini and Srikrishna Jayanti.

Janmashtami is the biggest festival of Mathura where Krishna was born and where he grew up in Vrindavan.  Krishna temples are decorated they attract many visitors during the day. Krishna's childhood mischief and love affairs of Radha-Krishna are especially popular.

Dahi Handi in Maharashtra

Janmashtami (known in Maharashtra as "Gokulashtami") is celebrated in cities like Mumbai and Pune. After a day of Krishna Janmashtami, Dahi handi is celebrated. According to this, Krishna used to seek and steal curd and butter and people hid their supplies beyond the reach of the infant. Krishna used to make human pyramids to break these high hanging pots with your friends.

On the day of Janmashtami, where curd pots are hung up, sometimes hanged from the second or third level of a building. According to the annual tradition, the teams of youth and boys called "Govind" go around these hanging pots, climb one another and make a human pyramid, then break the pots.

Nepal

In Nepal Hindus celebrate Krishna Janmashtami. Devotees read Bhagavad Gita and sing a religious song called Bhajan and Kirtan. The temples of Krishna have been decorated. Shops, posters and houses carry the motifs of Krishna.

Fiji

Janjashtami is known as "Krishna Ashtami" in Fiji.  Hindus gather at temples, with their 'Mandals' or devotees in the evening, sing songs of devotion to Krishna and distribute Prasad.

ISKCON TEMPLES 


The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), recognized as the Hare Krishna movement or Hare Krishnas, contains of five hundred centers, temples, joined vegetarian restaurants, hundreds local gathering organizations. ISKCON was founded in 1966 in New York by A. C.

ISKCON devotees chant God’s names in the form of the mantra, or prayer for deliverance: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

Janmastami is the birth of Lord Krishna who is one of the most important occasions of the year in Hindus. Today, Janmastami is celebrated throughout the globe at all ISKCON centers. All day performances of song, drama, dance and chanting of the Lord krishna.

Fasting Rules on Krishna Janmashtami

Devotees having fast on Janmashtami should eat one time food a day before Janmashtami. During the Janmashtami fast, no grains should be consumed unless fasting is done the following day after sunrise. During Janmashtami fast, all the rules followed during Ekadashi fast should be followed.
Paraná, which means fasting should be done at the right time. For Krishna Janmashtami fasting, Parana is done on next day after Sunrise when Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra ends.

Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki

Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki is most famous aarti of Lord Krishna. It is sung with great joy on most auspicious occasions related to Lord Krishna along with Krishna Janmashtami or Sri Krishna Jayanti Day. It is so popular that it is regularly recited in homes and various Krishna temples.
Lord Krishna has lot of names and Bihari is one of them. kunj represents the lush green groves of Vrindavan.
