The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), recognized as the Hare Krishna movement or Hare Krishnas, contains of five hundred centers, temples, joined vegetarian restaurants, hundreds local gathering organizations. ISKCON was founded in 1966 in New York by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the Guru and spiritual master of the organization.
ISKCON devotees chant God’s names in the form of the mantra, or prayer for deliverance: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

ISKCON belongs to the Gaudiya-Vaishnava sampradaya, is the Vedic or Hindu culture in India. Philosophically it is based on the Sanskrit texts Bhagavad-Gita and the Bhagavat Purana, or Srimad Bhagavatam.  ISKCON spread the awareness and growth of Vaishnavism worldwide since the late 1960s.

Kirtan
Kirtan, a form of religious chanting spread five hundred years ago in India, is adept by ISKCON devotees and has now spread around the world by efforts of the Vaishnava community.
In kirtan the singing or chanting of mantras and other religious songs is sung by simple and traditional musical instruments  like the mrdanga drum, kartals and harmonium. Kirtan is performed daily in Vaishnava temples. It may also be performed at home or in public. ISKCON members are seen regularly in the parks and streets of the world’s major cities performing kirtan.

Festivals
Festivals are a basic part of ISKCON.

Janmastami
Janmastami is the birth of Lord Krishna who is one of the most important occasions of the year in Hindus.Today, Janmastami is celebrated throughout the globe at all ISKCON centers. All day performances of song, drama, dance and chanting of the Lord krishna.

Diwali
Diwali therefore signifies the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival is frequently celebrated with firework Diwali lamps and feasting.
For ISKCON members celebrate the Diwali as it marks the return of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Krishna, to his country of Ayodhya, after his defeat of the evil king Ravana. Rama was welcomed by all of the citizens with pump and show.

Holi- Festival of Colors
Holi is today main festivals of thousands to ISKCON temples for a day of music, dance, feasting, and exuberant throwing of colors.

Sunday Open House
Every Sunday is a party at an ISKCON temple. With vegetarian meals, dance and religious dialogue, the guests can experience the arena’s oldest cultural tradition.
Hare Krishna Food for Life (FFL) is the world’s biggest vegetarian food distribution serving with initiatives in over 60 nations.

Srila Prabhupada, ISKCON’s Founder-acarya, is the motivation behind Food for Life. He said in 1972 that “No one within ten miles of an ISKCON temple must pass hungry.” Since that point ISKCON devotees have improved an international network of free food restaurants, relief programs setting up every day in many huge cities round the world.

Food for Life volunteers also respond to natural disasters, such as the wars in Bosnia and Chechnya, the Indian Ocean Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.

Core Beliefs of Iskcon

Bhakti Yoga
Yoga is more than just a physical exercise.
According to the traditional yoga structure was on path of God consciousness. The Gita ultimately prescribes bhakti-yoga (the direction of dedication and love) as the end result of other yoga practices. Bhakti-yoga focuses on developing our willpower, carrier and love for the Divinity, Lord Krishna.
Members of ISKCON practice bhakti-yoga in their houses and additionally worship in temples. They also promote bhakti-yoga, or Krishna Consciousness, thru fairs, yoga seminars and public chanting.

Meditation
Meditation is a religious practice determined in practically all religious but the methods can be different.
The Vaishnava lifestyle recommends the chanting the names of God to be a specially effective technique of spiritual awakening
The prayer or mantra that ISKCON devotees repeat is known as the Maha Mantra. It is made from three phrases Hare, Krishna and Rama. Hare refers to God’s strength. Krishna and Rama shows God as all-effective one who is the supply of all pride.
